One of the oldest kata; also called Passai. Common in various forms in many Learned styles Changing disadvantage to advantage by use of switching blocks & differing degrees of power
Jion Of Chinese origin. Named after the Jion Temple in China
This kata hides powerful attacking techniques within harmonious peaceful movements. Actually practiced in Shotokan & Wado- Ryu styles only
Empi
(flying swallow)
Previously named Wanshu of Chinese origin. Named because of its sharp, snappy movements like a swallow The performer deliberately creates unguarded movements in his defense in an attempt to induce his enemy to attack.
Kanku Dai
(look at the sky)
Previously named Koshanku. Itosu took various movements from this kata to create the 5 heian kata Symbolizes the defenses and counter attacks against eight adversaries
Hangestu
Taken from the kata Seishan Takes its name from the distinctive curved foot movements
Gankaku
(crane on a rock)
Previously named Shinto. It belongs to the Shorei style Concentrates its power & balance while standing on one leg
Jitte

Kanku sho Also called Kushanku Morote uke in three directions
Nijushiho Formerly known as Niseishi Meaning 24 steps The kata has varied application of tension and relaxation and transitions from slow application of kime to rapid execution of techniques
Sochin
Previously known as Hakko Keep a strong out side pressure on the stance while shifting the center of gravity to the front leg
Meikyo Previously called Rohai in other styles In this kata a technique called sankaku-tobi (triangular jump) appears. Supposedly once a secret and held as spiritual
Ji'in Temple Grounds The timing and turning movements must be performed smoothly and gently but with great strength and spirit
Wankan Also called Hito and Shiofu a verv old kata of Tomari-te The distinctive features of this kata are the numerous attacks aimed at the joints
Chinte Also called Shoin. Practiced in Shotokan and Shito ryu A kata with a wide circular movements and with open hand techniques to the eyes
Gojushiho sho 54 directions (less) A variation of Gojushiho dai with the same history
