Since 1963, JKA Chicago has been teaching the innovative methods of Shotokan Karate in the Chicagoland area.

The JKA was established by Walter Nakamoto in 1962, and originally called the Chicago Karate Club. A year later, the name was changed to the Japan Karate Association (JKA) Chicago, when Shojiro Sugiyama became the head instructor. Sensei Sugiyama moved JKA chicago to its now storied location at 853 W Belmont ave in 1972, and has continued to teach in this same location for over 35 years.

Over the decades, JKA Chicago became an important center for karate in the midwest, and built a reputation for generating legendary karate athletes. Many of these masters went on to build their own successful karate programs and schools, and have risen to important leadership roles in the local and national karate scene.

As of January 2011, JKA Chicago will be one of the elite martial arts programs offered by Fonseca Martial Arts, still taught in its historic location and with a continued commitment to deliver the finest instruction in the country.
